Aging-In-Place / Universal Design

We all want to stay independent for as long as possible. Unfortunately, life doesn't always cooperate. Aging, illness, injury and congenital disease all play a hand in our ability to remain independent. Perhaps aging parents are moving in with you. The new catch phrase among homeowners is "Aging-In-Place". Instead of selling their homes and moving into retirement villages or assisted-living facilities, a growing number of Americans are modifying their homes to make them more user-friendly as they age.

When assessing your current living environment, you need to examine all the major areas of your home.  Genesis can assist you in staying in your home for as long as possible by reviewing existing conditions and suggesting modifications to your home.  Priorities will be established for any suggested modifications.  Entrances, maneuvering space, doorways and clear floor space in Kitchens and Bathrooms are given the highest priority.  This allows a person using a wheelchair, or other device, to safely enter and exit the dwelling and navigate to and within the Kitchen and Bathroom.

Hallways, maneuvering space at doors, increased electrical outlets, adaptable cabinets, blocking for future grab bars and curbless showers are given the next highest priority.  This offers residents, a family member with a disability or an older adult the possibility to be safe and independent in their own home.

If you maintain a flower or vegetable garden in your backyard, you may want to consider raising your beds at some point to reduce fatigue and stress on your back if bending over for extended period of time is difficult.

There is a term for a design process that will take all this into account, “Universal Design”.  Universal Design is a design approach that seeks to create environments, objects and systems that can be used by as many people as possible.  Genesis will use the principles of Universal Design, as well as the Americans with Disabilities Guidelines, to design the custom features required to meet your individual needs.  From planning through construction, Genesis will be there to guide you along the path so you can continue to live independently for many years to come.
